This is the opportunity to join Carmeuse for an exciting internship. During 6 months, within the Innovation department, you will have the opportunity to review the influence of limestone calcination and quicklime hydration steps on the final state of the impurities in the lime/hydrated lime.

Purpose of the position

Carmeuse produces and commercializes Ca (and Mg)-based products:

  • Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) is a key products in Carmeuse’s portfolio.

Calcium hydroxide is obtained from a process in different steps:

  • First, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is extracted from the quarry;
  • Then, the calcium carbonate is calcined in a kiln to obtain calcium oxide (CaO);
  • Finally, the lime is converted into hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2) in a hydrator (reaction with water).

Calcium hydroxide (or called “Hydrate”) has a lot of potential applications as for example in:

  • The hydrates must fulfill different specifications (physical and chemical properties) to be used in specific applications.

The different properties of the hydrates are:

  • Chemical characteristics:
    • Major impurities
    • Minor impurities
    • Heavy metal content
    • Residual CO2
  • Physical characteristics
    • Textural properties
    • Density
    • Particle size distribution
  • Properties
    • Flowability
    • Solubility
    • Reactivity
    • Performance test

Work Description

The scope of the project is to study, with different chemical analyses (to identify), the impurity state in limestone, quicklime and hydrated lime.

The aim is also to understand how the state of the impurities is influenced by other impurities or by process parameters. A key element to identify is the oxidative level of each element at each phase.

Concretely, after a scientific bibliographic review, the work will continue with experimental reactions at laboratory scale. Product from the plant, sampled by the student and Carmeuse supervisor, will be compared with samples produced at lab in specific conditions. The main part will be to validate the right method to use to correctly measure the element.

The major contribution of the work is the understanding of impurity behavior in existing products and the impact in different Carmeuse applications. It is in the scope of ongoing project with industrial partner.

Your Profile

  • You are autonomous
  • You are a Team player
  • You are comfortable to work in a laboratory and in an office
  • You have a Research and Development mind
  • You have good communication skills
  • You are able to write report in English
  • And you are able to manage Confidentiality.

Why Carmeuse?

We truly believe that where you work matters and, as a family business, we know what makes our employees happy!

Carmeuse offers an industrial experience in the Innovation team (R&D). A part of the work will be performed in the laboratory in Seilles (Andenne) and the other part -as the product characterization- will be performed at the university laboratory.

  • You’ll have the opportunity to participate to new product development
  • You’ll have the opportunity to visit industrial plants and laboratories
  • You’ll work in a dynamic environment
  • You’ll have the possibility to work from home and/or at the office.

An internship can be coupled with the master thesis.
